CLOUD NEWS
-
Whatís Coming Next on DigitalOcean? - It looks like thereís an emerging 4th major cloud provider. With simple pricing models and the launch of its managed database service, DigitalOcean seems poised for success. Weíre excited to keep an eye on their 2019 performance.
-
AWS Brought in More Money than McDonaldís in 2018 - At more than $21 billion, AWSís revenues surpassed that of McDonaldís in 2018, and itís not because McDonaldís was having a bad year (no need to be concerned about Ronaldís job security). Instead, AWS saw massive growth, with fourth quarter earnings up almost 44% compared to the previous year.
-
Googleís Cloud Business Lags Behind Microsoft and Amazon - Conversely to our previous bit of news, Google seems to be falling behind its main two competitors in the cloud business. Googleís new cloud chief Thomas Kurian hopes to pursue growth where Google has already seen success - “government and top companies in retail, manufacturing, healthcare, media and finance.” Itís hard to judge the potential success of such a broad and ambiguous plan, so I guess weíll just have to wait and see.
-
IBM Announces Watson Anywhere - on February 12th, IBM announced Watson Anywhere, which allows customers to run IBMís artificial intelligence service on any cloud. This seems to be a play for differentiation, taking a more flexible approach in cloud technology compared to business leaders. Itís interesting to see this fight for dominance, both among the established players and the newer up-and-comers.
-
Automation is Key to Thwarting Cloud Security Threats - Automation of threat monitoring and patching software vulnerabilities is quickly becoming the only sustainable way to protect against the challenges of phishing attacks, unpatched systems, and unauthorized cloud applications, says a new research project conducted by Oracle and KPMG. If only this were a movie where we could simply hire the hackers to work on our side and solve every problem that wayÖ oh well.
