October 2020 Newsletter, Tidal Migrations
To cap off October, we thought we’d bring a little pro-bono DevOps education to the table. We often talk about embracing DevOps as part of a Transformative Migration, but don’t just take it from us! This expert panel of the Hoff, Flavor Flav, his clock and Carole Baskin really lay it out there for all. Hey, we all need to have our fun ;)
WHAT’S NEW WITH US
TIDAL EVENTS
We’ve still got spots left in our All-Virtual Migration Enablement Workshop set for Thursday, October 29, 2020. Register now and join us from home while our own David Colebatch walks you through the first 3 phases of the cloud migration process.
Can’t wait? You can sign up for a one-on-one if you like the sounds of a dedicated, private workshop, with our team.
PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS
We’ve released a ton of new improvements and capabilities recently, and we’re excited to be sharing this and others in the coming weeks:
APPROVED CLOUD PATTERNS
Once you’ve created the cloud architectures that work best for you, add them to our new pattern gallery, where you can repeat these across multiple teams, making it way easier to scale. Why mess with what (really) works?
ASK DAVID
“Hey David, in the workshops and in general conversation you talk about ‘cloud-native’ services. What exactly are these and why should I know about them?” - Kirsty from Toronto
Thanks for a great and important question Kirsty,
Let’s start with a picture. Solving the problem posed here is the easiest way to understand what was originally envisioned to be the ultimate benefit of using the cloud:
What you see is the November sales for Amazon represented by the blue curve with its daily spikes and valleys. The two big peaks are, you guessed it, Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Amazon simply cannot fall over or run out of capacity on its biggest sales days, so they over-provision the servers in the data centre to make sure that never happens. You can imagine what Jeff Bezos from Amazon said when he learned that he had to have 76% extra computing capacity just to ensure the site would be alive when it got busy. Probably something like: “look, I only want to pay for what’s under the blue curve!”
So, cloud-native really refers to the services you use provided by the cloud providers that empower this one goal. The attributes include services that are available on-demand, adopted programmatically, utilize automation, and are inherently elastic to dynamically scale up AND down to match your traffic. Only with these attributes will you see value for value when embracing the cloud. Cloud-native services can include micro-services, database as a service, compute as a service etc.
Who knew that these cloud-native services would open the way to improve both the speed and quality of application development?
I wrote a blog post on this a couple of years ago, so check it out for more information: How to Win at Cloud Native Migrations.
Keep those questions coming!
David

CLOUD NEWS
- AWS re:Invent Registration opens late October - Another one going all-virtual this year from Nov 30th-Dec 18th! Check out our favourite coverage of this awesome event with Cloud Economist Corey Quinn.
- Nasdaq Ramps Up Cloud Move - The stock market’s going off-prem! Since they’d already moved their data centres in Canada and the US to AWS pre-pandemic, their newfound ability to handle the influx of messaging they got when the pandemic hit confirmed their confidence that the cloud was the way to go.
- Cloud migrations can reduce CO2 emissions by nearly 60 million tons a year - And now for some good news (really!). In case you needed another reason to move to the cloud, it’s going to save the planet from the CO2 of the equivalent of 22 million cars taken off the road. And it looks like CEOs all over are stepping up to the challenge.
- Introducing DigitalOcean App Platform: reimagining PaaS to make it simpler for you to build, deploy, and scale apps - Cloud infrastructure provider DigitalOcean is helping you live the developer dream with their new App Platform - scaling your apps without jacking up the price!
- Microsoft debuts Azure Space to cater to the space industry, partners with SpaceX for Starlink data center broadband - Last month the bottom of the ocean, this month outer space. Microsoft gets to use SpaceX satellites for their new Azure Modular Datacenters, which can operate off-grid just like their underwater experiment. What else? Their Orbital Emulator is training AI for use in orbital spacecraft…
- Top cloud trends for 2021: Forrester predicts spike in cloud-native tech, public cloud - Market research company Forrester is playing Nostradamus again in their predictions of the near future of the cloud in 2021. No surprise here, but since the pandemic, everyone’s thoughts are around going off-prem, into the public cloud, and cloud-native. Oh, and keep an eye on Alibaba Cloud.
- IBM partners to help organizations assess the risk of climate change - Too big to fail at assessing climate risk? Not anymore, thanks to The Climate Service, who are helping financial institutions and multinational corporations comprehend and plan for the impact of climate change on business. And make sure to thank IBM, too, who’ve made this service easily accessible on Red Hat OpenShift on IBM Cloud.
That’s all for October 2020. If you’ve had a good time with us this newsletter, let us know by sharing on social media (links below) and keep your friends up to date.
